PURPOSE
To prevent veneer bubbling and delamination on doors manufactured with strandboard (Timberstrand) core, caused by voids and chips in the core surface that leave the veneer without a solid substrate to adhere to.
RESPONSIBILITY
Manufacturing staff cutting and preparing door cores; Project Managers tagging projects for strandboard core construction.
PROCEDURE
- Identify any project/work order tagged to use strandboard door core prior to core cutting.
- After the core is cut, inspect both faces for voids and deep chips (commonly caused by fly cutting during veneer prep).
- Fill any voids in the core so the veneer has a fully solid surface to adhere to — do not veneer directly over an unfilled void or chipped surface.
- Apply a 1/16" or 1/8" supercore veneer face to both sides of the core before final veneering.
- Add solid wood rails and stiles to the core edges so the strandboard core and supercore layer are concealed and do not show on the edge.
- If a bubble or delamination is discovered on a finished or in-process door, document it with a photo and route it to the Project Manager and Manufacturing lead for repair and root-cause review.
EXPECTATION
Veneered strandboard-core doors ship without bubbling or delamination caused by core voids or chipping.
OPEN ITEM — CONFIRM BEFORE FINALIZING
This procedure is based on an observation and proposed fix raised by Steve Smith (PM) on 6/2/2026, who explicitly flagged it as "something we should discuss as a team with manufacturing" rather than an already-agreed standard. This has not yet been confirmed as final Manufacturing policy.
