PURPOSE
To ensure any workplace injury is handled promptly, safely, and consistently — protecting the injured employee, ensuring proper documentation, and meeting OSHA recordkeeping obligations.
RESPONSIBILITY
All employees (reporting); Shop Supervisor/Manager on duty (immediate response); HR/Safety Coordinator (documentation, OSHA recordkeeping, follow-up).
PROCEDURE
- Stop and assess. The injured employee or a nearby coworker stops work at the affected station and assesses severity. If the injury is life-threatening or severe, call 911 immediately.
- Notify a supervisor. Notify the shift supervisor or manager on duty immediately, regardless of how minor the injury appears.
- Administer first aid. For minor injuries, the supervisor or a designated first-aid-trained employee administers basic first aid using the shop's first-aid kit.
- Escalate for medical care as needed. If the injury requires care beyond first aid, arrange transport to urgent care or the ER. Do not let an injured employee drive themselves if there's any doubt about their ability to do so safely.
- Secure the scene. If equipment was involved, secure/lock it out and do not disturb the scene until reviewed.
- Report the incident. The supervisor completes an internal incident report the same day, including date/time, location, employee(s) involved, description, and equipment involved.
- Notify HR/Safety Coordinator. Notified within 24 hours to determine OSHA recordability and workers' compensation next steps.
- Root cause review. For any injury beyond a minor first-aid case, the supervisor and Safety Coordinator conduct a brief root-cause review and identify preventive changes.
- Return-to-work. Coordinated with HR, with a medical release documented where applicable before resuming full duties.
EXPECTATION
Every workplace injury, regardless of severity, is reported the same day, receives appropriate care, and is documented well enough to support OSHA recordkeeping and prevent recurrence.
NOTE
This is a draft policy based on general workplace safety best practices, prepared for internal review. Not yet confirmed against Traum's actual insurance carrier requirements, workers' comp process, or Colorado-specific OSHA obligations.
