PURPOSE

To protect employees, contractors, and visitors from eye injury caused by flying debris, dust, and chips generated by shop machinery and tools.

RESPONSIBILITY

All employees, contractors, and visitors on the shop floor; Shop Supervisor (enforcement); HR/Safety Coordinator (policy and PPE stock).

PROCEDURE

  1. Where required. ANSI-approved safety glasses are required at all times on the shop floor, including anywhere machinery is running, staged, or being maintained.
  2. Who it applies to. All employees, contractors, and visitors entering the shop floor must wear safety glasses, regardless of task duration.
  3. Visitor/contractor access. Loaner safety glasses are kept at the shop floor entrance for visitors and contractors without their own; visitors are not permitted onto the floor without them.
  4. Prescription eyewear. Employees who wear prescription glasses must use ANSI-rated prescription safety glasses or OTC safety glasses/goggles that fit over prescription glasses.
  5. Supplemental PPE. For operations generating heavier debris (e.g., lathe work, grinding), a full face shield or goggles are worn in addition to safety glasses.
  6. Enforcement. The Shop Supervisor enforces this policy in real time; anyone without safety glasses is stopped and provided a pair before continuing onto the floor.
  7. Stock and maintenance. HR/Safety Coordinator ensures safety glasses (including visitor supply) are kept stocked at shop entry points and replaced when scratched or damaged.

EXPECTATION

No one is on the active shop floor without ANSI-approved eye protection, with zero eye-injury incidents attributable to a missed or skipped safety glasses requirement.
